Allergy testing plays a key role in diagnosing food allergies and guiding treatment plans. As the most common method used by allergists, skin prick allergy testing is a quick and reliable way to confirm allergy triggers. Even so, the process can feel intimidating, particularly for children going through it for the first time. So if you’re preparing for a skin prick test, here’s what you can expect during a visit to your Atlanta allergist.
How Skin Prick Allergy Testing Works
Whether you suspect certain foods are causing your symptoms or have no idea what’s triggering them, allergy testing can provide certainty. The results will confirm or rule out suspected triggers and help your physician shape a long-term treatment plan.
Why Skin Prick Testing Is Used
Skin prick testing is one of the most widely used methods for diagnosing food allergies thanks to the rapid, visible results it offers. The results are accurate and delivered more quickly than blood testing data or undergoing an oral food challenge. The test is minimally invasive and usually only causes a brief scratching sensation.
Getting Ready for the Allergy Test
Speak with your allergist before the test to determine if you need to temporarily stop certain medications, including antihistamines. You can also prepare your child for a food allergy test by explaining the process and providing reassurance.
The Skin Prick Test Procedure
During a skin prick test, small drops of allergenic substances are placed on the forearm or back. These drops contain proteins of suspected allergens such as peanuts, various tree nuts, milk, eggs and other common foods that trigger reactions. Following application of drops, the top layer of the skin is lightly pricked to allow an allergen to enter just below the skin’s surface. If a patient is allergic to any of these substances, they should get a small raised bump (wheal) and redness.
Duration of the Allergy Test
One of the key benefits of skin prick testing is the test’s short duration and quick results. Applying the allergens and pricking the skin will only take a few minutes. After this stage is complete, patients will need to wait around 15–20 minutes before the skin can be observed for reactions. Most appointments are completed within one hour, even with patients remaining in their allergist’s office to monitor for reactions.
Evaluating the Skin Prick Test Results
Your allergist will check the skin for signs of redness and a raised bump. This information is assessed in conjunction with your medical history and past symptoms to confirm a diagnosis. For patients that receive a confirmed diagnosis, the allergist will develop a comprehensive food allergy treatment plan to reduce the risk of severe allergic reactions.
