Atlanta food allergy testing FAQ

Professional food allergy testing is the only way to precisely diagnose an allergy. But many people with allergies are unsure how the testing process works, and what they should expect. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions Atlanta allergy sufferers and their parents have about food allergy testing.

Food Allergy Testing FAQ

What is the most common food allergy test?

The most common food allergy test is a skin prick test. In this test, an allergen is placed on the forearm and a needle gently punctures the skin. The patient’s reaction is monitored and evaluated. Common testing alternatives include blood and oral challenge testing.

What can I expect from a food allergy test?

Skin prick tests and oral challenge tests can detect an allergic reaction in response to contact with an allergen under controlled conditions. A blood test requires that a blood sample is taken. The sample is sent for lab analysis to identify the level of antibodies relating to an allergen.

What kind of questions would an allergist ask you when trying to determine if you have a food allergy?

An allergist will ask about your symptoms, what foods you were eating, the quantity of food consumed, your general medical history – and any medications you are taking.

How reliable are food sensitivity tests?

Food sensitivity tests conducted by professional allergists are extremely reliable. Test results are examined along with your medical history.

Are home food allergy tests effective?

Home food allergy tests are often unreliable and are prone to false positives. This uncertainty can lead to unnecessary dietary changes, and clearly highlights the importance of food allergy testing from a board certified allergist.

What are the signs I may need a food allergy test?

If you experience a skin rash, runny nose, stomach pains, congestion or swelling of the mouth after eating certain foods, you should consider a food allergy test.

How long does it take to get the results of a food allergy test?

Results from a skin prick test usually take 15–30 minutes. Blood test results could take from a few days to two weeks. Oral challenge tests often take three to six hours.

Does food allergy testing hurt?

No. Skin prick testing can feel like the skin is being slightly scratched. During a blood test, the patient might also feel a minor irritation from the needle insertion.

Do I need to prepare for a food allergy test?

An allergist may request that a patient stop taking antihistamines before a skin prick test. If there are health concerns about temporarily stopping a medication, a blood test may be used instead.

How many allergens can be tested at once during a food allergy test?

It’s possible to test for as many as 25–50 different allergens during a food allergy test. However, most tests won’t require this number after an allergist identifies the suspected allergens.
